Inside Politics: Sheehan Sees Charter Mediator Role

Kathy Sheehan, right, speaks as she joins other Albany mayoral candidates Jesse Calhoun, left, and Theresa Portelli in a debate on Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2013, at UAlbany in Albany, N.Y. (Cindy Schultz / Times Union) Photo: Cindy Schultz / 00024299A Many of Sheehan's core supporters and allies, however, have sided with the school district, which has repeatedly blasted the charter schools for a lack of transparency. "I have supporters who are absolutely very distrustful, and I understand that they have a difficult time hearing me say something like 'Charter schools are filling a perceived need for many families in our district,'" she acknowledged, adding: "I can't discount that." But she also said the state should take greater responsibility for funding charter schools to lighten the load on city taxpayers. Since the 2011 flap over the financing deal, Sheehan said, she has had productive conversations with Christian Bender , executive director of Brighter Choice. "I don't focus or dwell on what I understood to be complete and utter street theater. I understand why they did what they did," she said.
